How to Install Joomla! on Kali Linux

Joomla! is an open-source content management system (CMS) used for creating, managing, and publishing web content. In this tutorial, we will show you how to install Joomla! on Kali Linux.

Prerequisites

  • Kali Linux installed and updated
  • LAMP stack installed
  • PHP version 5.3.10 or higher installed
  • MySQL server installed
  • Basic knowledge of Linux command-line interface

Steps

  1. Download the latest version of Joomla! from the official website - https://www.joomla.org/download.html.

  2. Extract the downloaded Joomla! package to the /var/www/html directory. You can use the terminal command shown below to extract it.

sudo tar -zxvf Joomla_[version_number].tar.gz -C /var/www/html/
  1. Next, set the correct ownership and file permissions on the extracted files using the command below.
sudo chown -R www-data:www-data /var/www/html/
sudo chmod -R 755 /var/www/html/
  1. Create a new database for Joomla! using the following commands in the terminal. Replace [database_name], [database_username], and [database_password] with your preferred values.
sudo mysql -u root -p
CREATE DATABASE [database_name];
CREATE USER '[database_username]'@'localhost' IDENTIFIED BY '[database_password]';
GRANT ALL PRIVILEGES ON [database_name].* TO '[database_username]'@'localhost';
FLUSH PRIVILEGES;

  1. Navigate to http://localhost/Joomla_[version_number]. You will see the Joomla! installation page. Follow the prompts to set up your site, including entering the database name, username, and password you created in step 4.

  2. Once the installation is complete, you can access and manage your Joomla! website by going to http://localhost/Joomla_[version_number]/administrator/.
