How to Install GeneWeb on Windows 10
GeneWeb is a free genealogy software that can be used to build a family tree and share it with others. In this tutorial, we will guide you on the steps needed to install GeneWeb on your Windows 10 computer.
Prerequisites
Before we proceed to install GeneWeb, please note that you need to have the following:
- A stable internet connection
- A web browser such as Google Chrome, Mozilla Firefox, or Microsoft Edge
- A terminal or command prompt
- Administrative rights on your Windows 10 computer
Steps to Install GeneWeb on Windows 10
Open your web browser and go to https://geneweb.tuxfamily.org/wiki/GeneWeb. Click on the "Download" button to download the latest version of the software.
Once the download is complete, locate the downloaded file in your computer's download directory.
If you do not have 7-Zip or any other compression software installed on your computer, you can download it from https://www.7-zip.org/ and install it.
Right-click on the downloaded GeneWeb file and select "7-Zip" from the context menu. Then click on "Extract Here" to extract the contents of the file.
The extracted files will be saved in a new folder named "geneweb-
" (e.g. geneweb-7.0.2) in the same directory as the downloaded file. Open the extracted folder and locate the "bin" folder.
Open a terminal or command prompt with administrative rights
Navigate to the "bin" folder in the terminal by typing the following command:
cd <extracted folder path>/geneweb-<version>/bin
- Once you are inside the "bin" folder, type the following command to start GeneWeb:
./gw_bee -http -lang en -base <name of your genealogy> -open <genealogy directory>
Please note that you need to replace <name of your genealogy> and <genealogy directory> with your desired names.
- Once GeneWeb is started, open your web browser and go to http://localhost:2317/ to access the GeneWeb interface.
Congratulations! You have successfully installed GeneWeb on your Windows 10 computer. You can now start building your family tree and sharing it with others.
